Indoor climbing on a purpose built climbing wall is much safer and better controlled than outdoor climbing (and you don't need a mountain). The small but growing U3A Climbing Group currently meets monthly on a flexible basis so its members can practise and improve their skills. We have 3 belayers able to support new climbers on safety ropes, and there is also scope for solo climbing with an automatic belay, or for lower level climbing without a rope. It is even possible to get a good workout while staying close to the ground. While basic fitness is needed, the climbs can be as tough or easy as you like, as there is a very big range available, from the very easy upwards, with lots of scope for coffee and cake after a few good climbs. Also,as winter draws in, there is one big advantage - no rain !
