In December a member of the u3a cycling group suffered a cardiac arrest at Horsley station just before embarking on a ride. Fortunately 3 fellow riders who had been trained in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) were on hand and together with an Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) they saved his life. The emergency services arrived to look after him as well.

As a result the u3a is running 5 hands-on CPR training sessions for its members run by the charity Heart Start. The first took place on May 27 at the Horsley Scout hut and 40 attended. Everyone was keenly interested to learn the skills and feedback was very positive. Participants were asked to donate £5 each to Heart Start and the Scouts. A further 4 sessions are scheduled on the 4th Tuesday of the month.
