The Films group meets monthly at 7pm for refreshments prior to a 7.30 start, when we show a variety of different types of film, chosen in advance by the group members. We show a mixture of classical, arthouse greats and modern films. Our current programme is shown below. A £2.00 charge per person is currently made to cover expenses.

The Great Gatsby { 2013 Romance/Musical 2h 23m - Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton } A writer and 'Wall Street' trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbour, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.

3rd April

My Uncle (Mon Oncle) { 1958 Comedy/Drama 1h 57m - Stars: Jacques Tati, Jean-Pierre Zola, Adrienne Servant } The first of Tati's films to be released in colour, 'Monsieur Hulot' visits the technological world of his sister, brother-in-law and nephew, but does not really manage to adapt to this environment.

1st May

Kramer vs. Kramer { 1979 Drama/Legal drama 1h 45m - Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Jane Alexander } After his wife leaves him, a work-obsessed Manhattan advertising executive is forced to learn long-neglected parenting skills, but a heated custody battle over the couple's young son deepens the wounds left by the separation.

Tea with Mussolini { 1999 War/Comedy1h 57m - Stars: Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright } An Italian orphan is adopted by his father's secretary, Mary who lives in a slightly eccentric British refugee community of pre-WWII Florence. Mary and her friends live a sheltered existence that they feel is protected by Mussolini himself. Until Italy joins Germany and changes their status to enemies.

Freedom Writers { 2007 Crime/Drama 2h 03m - Stars: Hilary Swank, Imelda Staunton, Patrick Dempsey } Erin Gruwell, a young teacher in a racially divided Los Angeles school, inspires her students, deemed incapable of learning, to learn tolerance, apply themselves, and pursue education after leaving.

The 'Maggie' { 1954 Comedy/Drama 1h 32m - Stars: Paul Douglas, Alex Mackenzie, James Copeland } An American businessman in Scotland is conned into shipping a valuable load of cargo to a Scottish island via a coal-powered boat.

4th September

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest { 1975 Drama/Comedy drama 2h 18m - Stars: Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Michael Berryman } A rebellious convict is sent to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation in 1963 Oregon, and encourages his docile companions to take more control of their lives and defy the tyrannical head nurse.

The Penguin Lessons { 2024 Comedy/Drama 1h 50m - Stars: Steve Coogan, Jonathan Pryce, Bruno Blas } A disillusioned Englishman who goes to work in a school in a divided Argentina in 1976 finds his life transformed when he rescues an orphaned penguin from the beach.
